The American Bulldog and You

Hello and thank you for coming back to 'The A' Word!' Today I wanted to give you some information on one of my favorite breeds: The American Bulldog.

History

The American Bulldog is a descendant of the ever so cute and scrunchy English Bulldog. They made their appearance in the early 17th century but made it to the United States in the early 1800's. They made their appearance with immigrates who in many parts of the world decided to leave their homes due to crop failure, land and job shortages, rising taxes, and famine, because the USA was perceived as the land of economic opportunity.

Structure

The structure and build of American Bulldogs resemble that of the Pitt Bull tremendously. This makes since, since they are often called the cousin of those awesome breeds. At there full growth males can weight anywhere between 60-100 pounds while females can weight anywhere between 60-80 pounds. American Bullies can also grow to be between 20-28 inches tall for males and 20-25 inches tall for females.

Temperament

These beautiful creatures are loyal to there owners but they are also very self-confident. This means that these breeds are better for owners that have experience with many breeds or that is very stern in there training. American Bulldogs are very smart and are like testy children when it comes to their training. They are also breed to be working however, they take after their owners and are ready to lay down and cuddle whenever you are!

My experience

I can say my dog Sundae has completely lived up to her breeds description. She will listen to know one that she feels does not posse any real authority, which means she really only listens to me haha. Once that relationship was successfully developed she was fairly easy to train. She can be very rowdy and rambunctious but personally I love it, but when its time to settle in shes all for it and wants to cuddle. I will say that she does require (like a child)

"reeducation." By reeducation I mean maybe twice a year she will try to push her luck and we have to go over the basics to get her back in line. Overall I love my baby and the breed. I love the challenges and all the love that I get from her and I highly recommend that if you are interested in this breed you do your research and head to a shelter to pick one up!

I hope that this little article could shed some light on American Bulldogs for you and encourage you to do more research.
