Raw Diets🍖 and Your Pets

April 1st through the 7th is National Raw Feeding week, so in light of that I figured we would discuss some pros and cons to raw food diets. Raw diets are still pretty debatable in the animal world, which is understandable given all the wishy washy information out there.

But if we all think about it cats and dogs used to be wild beings that naturally consumed raw diets. Even during the early stages of domestication raw diets were used and pets were mainly for work and they got that work done so it can't be all bad right?

So, lets get some history on this subject.

In doing my research I found out that commercial pet food was developed in the 1860's by an electrician named James Sprat. Mr. Sprat developed a dog food names "Sprats Dog and Puppy Cakes. This (at the time) expensive dog food cost about a days worth of work for a craft man and was made up of a mix of grains, beetroots, vegetables and “the dried unsalted gelatinous parts of Prairie Beef,” according to the advertisement for this product.

At some point in time a scientist started to take notice that his dogs didn't look and operate the same as the ones from his childhood. At some point he decided to change there diet and feed his dogs like he did in his childhood- with a raw table food and scraps diet. Once he had been doing that for a while he noticed that his dogs started to seem bigger, muscular, and overall healthier, like he remembered from his childhood. And since then many others have done the same thing.

Now before we go any further I just want to say that this is not a paid advertisement and I am not hoping to suede you in either direction, this is just the findings of my research.

There have been numerous studies that have shown both that feeding a raw diet is good and bad. But honestly guys I think it all depends on what you are looking for in your pets appearance. Obviously, kibble is just fine for your pets because they more than likely have been eating it for all of their life. However, if you have taken notice in what professional breeders are feeding their dogs more often than not it is a raw diet, or the diet consists of a partly raw diet and that is because of the benefits. Those being shinny coats, healthier skin, better body mass, better breath, ect. But there are downsides to raw diets as well. Some of those being the cost of feeding raw diets, time consumption for the prep of the food, possible diarrhea or constipation and the possibility of feeding your pets foods that have not been properly cleaned.

Honestly, there are probably just as many pros as there is to cons so, whats really important to know about Raw diets?

Basically, if you are going to give your pets raw diets you just need to be aware of the B.A.R.F rule. (Great name for a rule am I right?! Lol.)

B.- Biologically

A.- Appropriate

R.- Raw

F.- Food

and

B.- Bones

A.- And

R.- Raw

F.- Food

The whole point of this rule to really say "Everything in Moderation", THE RIGHT MODERATION.

The right amount of meats, the right amount of fruits and veggies, and the right amount of micro-nutrients.

If you follow this rule assuming your pet has no other health issues then your pet should do just fine on this diet and may even begin to look better and healthier down the line! Of course I recommend that everyone talk their veterinarian about possible diet changes and any other concerns regarding this subject BEFORE switching to a raw diet.
